Primary Problem: Persistent Slab
Bottom Line: The primary concern is avalanches breaking on weak layers near the bottom of the snowpack. Wind slab avalanches can be triggered where recent drifts formed and can be large enough to bury or injure a person. Cautious route finding is key today. Find terrain sheltered from the wind that has minimal hazards like cliffs, trees and gullies, or keep it simple by staying on slopes less than 30 degrees, and avoid runout zones below steep, wind-loaded slopes.

Many ridgelines had been scoured down to the grass from yesterday's winds. HS was around 100cm around 8k feet and significantly shallower at lower elevations. New snow totals from the past couple of days was around 20-30cm. We experienced a remarkable number of thunderous collapses throughout the day (I lost count), one of which triggered an avalanche into Specimen Creek while we were in the flats.

Dug a small test pit. Unprofessional observation ectp 10 on the persistent weak layer seen across the advisory area. On our way out near the cabin I cut a line close to a creek to see if I could trigger something.

The Last Word

On Tuesday, a skier was killed in an avalanche in Colorado (initial report from CAIC). Last Sunday a skier was killed, and a second sustained injuries in an avalanche in western Wyoming (preliminary information from BTAC). Our hearts go out to the skiers’ friends and family, backcountry partners, and the rescue teams.
